Churches and the Central European Transition
Esztergom, September 28-29, 2021.

The St. Adalbert Foundation for Research of Central and Eastern Europe
is organizing an international scientific conference entitled Churches and the Central European
Transition in connection with the 30th anniversary of the Central European political, social and
economic transition and the repatriation of the remains of Cardinal József Mindszenty to Esztergom.

The main topics of the conference are as follows:

- The situation of Central European Churches in the decade before the Central European transition.
- The situation of Churches in Central European state socialist systems (changes in church policy in
individual Central European states, the relationship between Churches and the opposition movements,
Pope Saint John Paul II, the Solidarity Movement and the Polish Church, the underground Church in
Czechoslovakia and the official church hierarchy, the situation of the Protestant Churches in Central
Europe, the relations of the Protestant Churches with Churches of Western Europe, the role of the
most significant people and groups of that era).
- The Central European transition and the Churches in 1989. The role of churches and church
personalities in transition.
- The churches in the period of the Central European transition, the forms of the renewal of church
life, the rebirth of the church institutional system, the issue of church compensation.
- The activity and role of the Churches of Central Europe in the decades following the transition.

Venue of the Conference: Esztergom, Szent Adalbert Központ – Saint Adalbert Centre (2500
Esztergom, Szt. István tér 10.)
September 28-29, 2021.
We are inviting the guest speakers from Central Europe (from the countries of the Visegrad Group,
Croatia and Slovenia)
Conference language: Hungarian, English, Czech, Croatian, Polish, Slovak, Slovenian (interpretation
provided)
The length of the lectures is 20 minutes.
Registration for the Conference: May 4, 2021 by sending a short (1000–1500 n) synopsis in the
